RACV Public Liability Insurance (Australia)

RACV Public Liability Insurance in Australia: what to know about the cover on offer, how to compare it with alternatives and what to check first.

RACV public liability insurance is a cover that RACV's own page says comes inside its business insurance package in Australia, and this guide sets out what that page, RACV's policy documents page and its PDS say. We name the insurer the documents name, show which PDS applies when, and compare the PDS with the NRMA one. We do not rate or recommend RACV.

Quick answer

RACV's page says public and products liability is automatically included in its business insurance, up to $20 million each year. The PDS applying to policies from 23 August 2025 calls the cover General and Products Liability, Section 5.

Who Issues RACV Public Liability Insurance and How to Check It

The product page says RACV Business Insurance is issued by Insurance Australia Ltd and names RACV Insurance Services Pty Ltd, AFS Licence No. 230039, as the referrer. It says the referrer receives commission for each policy sold or renewed. That is a disclosure we think readers should see, because the entity that sells a policy and the entity that issues it are different companies.

You can test the insurer name on the APRA register of general insurers. We could not reopen it this week, so check it again. The same company and ABN appear in the PDS for NRMA business insurance, covered in our NRMA guide. The so what: match the register name to the name on your quote and certificate.

Which RACV Document Applies to You

RACV's policy documents page lists a current business PDS and a previous one. The dates decide which wording governs a policy, so the table sets them out.

Document When it applies
Business Insurance PDS and Policy Booklet, August 2025 Policies starting or renewing from 23 August 2025
Previous PDS, March 2024 Start 1 March 2024 to 22 August 2025; renewal 6 April 2024 to 22 August 2025
Older EasyBiz PDSs Listed for start or renewal dates from 2018 to 2020
Business Insurance TMD No date shown on the page

Our arithmetic from the page: the March 2024 PDS ran from 1 March 2024 to 22 August 2025, which is about 17 and a half months, and the August 2025 PDS has applied for about 14 months as at 3 November 2026. A policy that started on 1 July 2025 would have sat under the March 2024 wording, and its renewal on 1 July 2026 would fall under the August 2025 wording. The older EasyBiz documents remain listed, so a long-standing policyholder may hold one. Check the PDS name on your own schedule.

What the RACV Public Liability Insurance Page Says

The page describes cover for the legal costs of defending or settling a liability claim, for loss or damage to someone else's property because of your business operations, and for injury to others, including first aid expenses. It gives two examples: loss of goods in your care, such as a client's bag, and a customer injured by an employee's uncleaned spill. These are marketing statements, not the contract.

It also says you can cover your business for up to $20 million for public liability each year. Whether that is per claim or in total depends on the wording, so ask. The page lists optional extras such as commercial motor vehicles, theft and money, machinery and business interruption. It has no date apart from a 2026 copyright line. Our 10 million guide shows how other insurers present limits.

RACV and NRMA Documents Compared

We opened the front sections of the RACV and NRMA business PDSs this week. They match in several places, which we set out as a table of facts we saw and not as a claim about how the brands are run.

Point RACV PDS NRMA PDS
Preparation date 1 May 2025 1 May 2025
Liability section Section 5, General and Products Liability, page 36 Section 5, General and Products Liability, page 36
Excess wording Applies to all amounts including defence and investigation costs The same
Insurer named Insurance Australia Ltd Insurance Australia Limited

The match is consistent with two brands selling a similar document, and we cannot confirm more. We could not read the liability text itself in either PDS, because it sat beyond the portion we could open. The so what: do not treat a brand page for one as a reading of the other, because limits, eligibility and pricing may differ.

RACV Public Liability Insurance Eligibility and How It Is Sold

The page says the business insurance suits small businesses and sole traders, and it defines that as fewer than 20 employees and less than $5 million turnover per year. A larger business would need to ask whether it qualifies. You can get a quote online or by phone on 1300 133 614. A separate RACV page, when we read it earlier, said home-based businesses can take the same business insurance with public and products liability included. Our personal guide explains where a home policy stops.

RACV Public Liability Insurance Complaints and Disputes

The product page we read states no complaints process and names no external scheme. We did not see a complaints process in the parts of the PDS we could open, so check your documents. Our national guide explains that AFCA says it cannot consider public liability for small business insurance products, so ask AFCA early whether it can help.

What to Check in the RACV Public Liability Wording

  1. Does the limit meet each contract, licence or lease I hold?
  2. Does the limit apply per claim or across the year?
  3. Do defence costs sit inside the limit or in addition to it?
  4. Which RACV PDS applies to my start or renewal date?
  5. Does an exclusion touch the work I do?

A certificate of currency confirms the entity covered, the type of cover and that the policy is valid on a given date. Our certificate guide explains what to expect.
