Public Liability Insurance RAC (Australia)

Public Liability Insurance RAC in Australia: what to know about the cover on offer, how to compare it with alternatives and what to check first.

Public liability insurance RAC searches in Australia usually mean one of the state motoring clubs: RAC in Western Australia, RAA in South Australia, RACQ in Queensland or RACV in Victoria. This guide shows what each club's own pages say about business liability cover, names the insurers they name, and follows a 2026 competition decision that affects RAC. We do not rate or recommend any club or insurer.

Quick answer

RAC's small business page refers members to a tradie policy issued by another company, with up to $20 million for public and product liability. RAA and RACQ pages mention no business liability cover. Check the issuer.

RAC in Western Australia

An earlier version of this guide could not find a RAC page on business cover. We have now found one. RAC's small business insurance page promotes a VIZ Tradies Insurance policy that RAC refers members to, and it lists legal liability of up to $20 million for public and product liability. It also lists tools and equipment cover of up to $50,000 and a tax audit limit of $50,000.

The page names the insurer as Ivory Insurance Pty Limited, with VIZ Insurance Pty Limited acting as agent. It says RAC Insurance Pty Limited was the product issuer only for policies commenced from 1 June 2023 to 30 June 2025, and that RAC receives a commission for referrals. The page does not say who issued policies outside that window. The page's referral offer runs until 30 June 2027, and we do not repeat its promotional terms.

Here is our own arithmetic on the issuer window. From 1 June 2023 to 30 June 2025 is 25 months. A policy that began on 1 May 2023, or on 1 July 2025, falls outside it, and the page does not say who issued such policies. The so what: for a RAC-linked business policy, the club's name is not enough, so read the issuer on your own documents and the VIZ policy wording.

The IAG Decision and What It Covers

RAC's own pages describe a proposed partnership under which IAG would acquire and manage 100% of RAC's insurance underwriting. The ACCC announced a Phase 2 review on 17 April 2026, naming motor vehicle and home and contents insurance in Western Australia as the markets of concern. A media release dated 23 September 2026 says the ACCC decided IAG must not put the acquisition into effect, and that a public benefit application can follow.

Date Event Source
17 April 2026 ACCC announces a Phase 2 review ACCC media release
23 September 2026 ACCC opposes the acquisition Media release of that date
13 October, year not stated IAG lodges a public benefit application, per RAC RAC update page

The ACCC release says it has 50 business days to determine a public benefit application, subject to extensions. Counting from 13 October 2026 and ignoring holidays and extensions, that points to around 22 December 2026. That is our arithmetic, and we read RAC's 13 October as 2026 because it follows the September decision. It is not a forecast. RAC's page says there is no immediate change to current policies, and that the deal is primarily home and motor. Neither the ACCC release nor RAC's page describes any effect on business cover.

RAA in South Australia

The RAA insurance page lists car, home, travel, caravan, motorcycle, boat, trailer and mobility scooter insurance, and landlord and short stay cover. It says its landlord and short stay policy can cover a permanent or holiday rental, and it says nothing about liability on that page. Business insurance is not mentioned apart from a footer link. The page says Allianz South Australia Insurance Limited is the insurer, and that it acquired RAA Insurance Limited on 1 July 2025. Our Allianz guide covers the Allianz public liability page.

RACQ in Queensland

The RACQ insurance page lists car, home, pet, travel, boat, caravan and trailer, motorcycle, and RV insurance. It does not list business insurance or public liability. It says insurance products, excluding travel, are issued by RACQ Insurance Limited, ABN 50 009 704 152, and arranged by RACQ Distribution Services Pty Ltd. The page's footer is dated 2021 and it carries no update date, so confirm details. If you hold a RACQ policy for another purpose, do not assume it responds to a business claim. Our home guide explains how home legal liability treats business activity.

RACV in Victoria

RACV is the club whose own page describes the product. It says public and products liability is automatically included in RACV Business Insurance, up to $20 million each year, for businesses with fewer than 20 employees and under $5 million turnover. Our RACV guide covers the page, the issuer and the PDS dates.

Checking the Name Behind the Brand

Public liability insurance RAC members find may be written by a company other than the club. A club name is not an insurer. The table above shows four arrangements, including a referral to a third party issuer, an issuer that changed in 2025 and an underwriter that may change if a deal is approved. Match the entity on your quote and certificate to the APRA register of general insurers, as business.gov.au suggests. We could not reopen the register this week.

A certificate of currency confirms the entity covered, the type of cover and that the policy is valid on a given date, and RAC's page says it is emailed instantly after purchase. Our certificate guide explains what to expect.

What Could Change by 2027

Item What we know at 3 November 2026 Why it matters
IAG and RAC A public benefit application is lodged and no decision is reported The underwriter of RAC home and motor policies may change
RAC referral offer Runs until 30 June 2027 The referral arrangement may end
Club pages Several are undated or carry old footers Re-check before you rely on a figure

Where to Go Next on Cairn Cover

The one thing to remember about public liability insurance RAC searches: the club name tells you little until you check the insurer and the wording. Cairn Cover is a free guide and does not sell insurance or quote prices. Start with the national guide, then the cost guide, the quotes guide and the Queensland guide.
